Silent auto-renewal
The contract re-bills for successive periods indefinitely unless the consumer affirmatively cancels, with no reminder promised; variants renew into another 12-24-month commitment, or silently restart the minimum term when you change plan, upgrade equipment, accept a retention offer or 'freeze' a gym membership (freeze months are added to the term and dues resume automatically).

Why it bites
Consumers forget and are re-charged for a full month or year they do not use; one missed date locks you into another year, often with an ETF attached to the new term; a small tariff tweak near the end of a contract quietly starts a fresh 24 months.
Is it enforceable where you are
The same clause can be routine in one country and void in another. What follows is what the law says where you are — not advice on your particular contract.
In the US, ROSCA and state automatic-renewal laws such as California's ARL apply; in the EU, Directive 93/13 Annex 1(h) and national reminder rules (Germany §309 Nr. 9 BGB, France's loi Chatel) govern renewal.
United States
ROSCA (15 U.S.C. 8401-05) requires clear disclosure, express consent and a simple cancellation mechanism; California ARL (B&P 17600 ff.) requires a reminder 15-45 days before renewal of terms of a year or more and 3-21 days before a free trial over 31 days ends; NY GBL 527-a requires notice of material changes and online cancellation for online sign-ups (no general reminder duty). The FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel rule was vacated (8th Cir., Jul 2025); ROSCA / FTC Act §5 enforcement continues.

Russia
Allowed, but from 1 Mar 2026 (376-ФЗ, ст. 16.1 ЗоЗПП) the service must notify before each recurring charge, accept refusal electronically and stop charging once the card is removed; ст. 32 ЗоЗПП / ст. 782 ГК — consumer may refuse at any time paying only actual expenses, so a fixed renewal term, freeze or new minimum term cannot block exit; non-price changes to telecom contracts require a дополнительное соглашение.

What to do

- Find the renewal sentence and screenshot it
- Set a reminder 7 days before the renewal date
- Ask for a plan without auto-renewal or 'thereafter month-to-month'
- Before any plan change ask in writing whether a new minimum term starts
- If you intend to leave, cancel rather than freeze
- If charged unexpectedly, demand a refund citing missing reminder/consent and use chargeback if refused.
