Early cancellation deadline
To stop renewal the consumer must give notice 30, 60 or 90 days before the term ends — or at least 24-48 hours before the billing date, which itself is 1-3 days before the renewal date; later notice is treated as late and applied only to the following period.

Why it bites
The window closes before most people think about renewal; a cancellation sent 'too late' or 'on the last day' triggers another full term or another month; it is the textbook unfair term in EU/UK law yet standard in gyms, software, app stores and memberships.
Is it enforceable where you are
The same clause can be routine in one country and void in another. What follows is what the law says where you are — not advice on your particular contract.
In the US, ROSCA and state automatic-renewal laws such as California's ARL apply; in the EU, Directive 93/13 Annex 1(h) and national reminder rules (Germany §309 Nr. 9 BGB, France's loi Chatel) govern renewal.
United States
Generally enforceable if disclosed, but ROSCA/state ARLs require a simple cancellation mechanism and reminders (CA ARL 15-45 days before annual renewal; NY GBL 527-a); charging before the disclosed date or during a promised free period is deceptive (FTC Uber One allegations 2025); CA ARL requires cancellation to be honored for the next period.

UCTD 93/13 Annex 1(h): auto-extension where the opt-out deadline is unreasonably early is indicatively unfair — term void; Germany caps notice at 1 month (§309 Nr. 9 BGB); Netherlands max 1 month after the first term; early charging must be transparent (UCTD Art 5, CRD pre-contract information).

Russia
Notice windows cannot block exit: ст. 32 ЗоЗПП and ст. 782 ГК give the consumer the right to refuse at any time; a clause conditioning exit on a deadline or charging for lateness is void under ст. 16 п. 2 пп. 3 ЗоЗПП; from 1 Mar 2026 the notification must precede the charge and refusal after it must be honoured (ст. 16.1).

- Diary the last permitted cancellation day (term end minus notice period minus mail time
- Treat app-store deadlines as renewal date minus 3 days)
- Send notice early in a provable channel
- If you missed it, cite UCTD Annex 1(h)/CRA Sch 2 para 9 (EU/UK) or ст. 32 ЗоЗПП (RU) and demand exit
- US: check state reminder rules and dispute if no reminder was sent.
