Contract trap · Insurance
Insurer cancels, you get no refund
The policy renews automatically from stored card details at a premium inflated relative to new-business quotes, with opt-out before an early cut-off and cancellation by phone; the insurer may cancel at short notice ('for any reason' in the first 60-90 days, after a claim), non-renew without reasons or force-place cover at several times the price; a consumer who cancels gets no refund (RU statutory default, п. 3 ст. 958 ГК), a 'short-rate' refund or pays an admin fee.

Why it bites
Insurers monetise inertia (UK FCA: six million policyholders would have saved £1.2bn by switching in 2018); being dropped after one claim; paying a year's premium and getting nothing back; a non-renewed mortgaged home ends up with lender-placed cover at 2-3x the cost.
Is it enforceable where you are
The same clause can be routine in one country and void in another. What follows is what the law says where you are — not advice on your particular contract.
In the UK, the Insurance Act 2015 and Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 restrict what an insurer may avoid; in the EU, the IDD and Directive 93/13 apply, and in the US, insurance is regulated state by state.
United States
Auto-renewal with statutory notice is standard; state statutes fix cancellation/non-renewal notice periods (typically 10 days non-payment, 30-60 otherwise) and restrict mid-term cancellation to listed grounds; short-rate tables allowed; price optimisation restricted by many state regulators; CFPB Regulation X 12 CFR 1024.37 requires 45 days' notice before force-placed charges and refund of overlapping premiums.

European Union
Directive 93/13 Annex (f)-(h): discretionary termination, termination without reasonable notice or auto-extension with an unreasonably early opt-out deadline is presumptively unfair; France (Loi Chatel/Hamon) lets consumers cancel tacitly renewed policies at any time after the first year; distance-sold insurance carries a 14-day withdrawal (30 for life) under Directive 2002/65/EC.

United Kingdom
FCA PS21/5 (from 1 Jan 2022): home/motor renewal price may not exceed the equivalent new-business price, easy cancellation of auto-renewal, last year's premium on the notice (ICOBS 6.5); ICOBS 7: 14-day cancellation (30 for life/protection) with pro-rata refund; insurer cancellation needs a valid reason and notice; no-refund clauses assessable under CRA 2015 Sch 2.

Russia
ОСАГО never auto-renews; voluntary policies may provide пролонгация but recurring card debits need explicit consent (ст. 16 ЗоЗПП; 161-ФЗ); ст. 958 ГК: the insured may cancel at any time but premium is refundable only if the contract so provides (п. 3), so «премия не возвращается» is lawful outside the cooling-off; Указание ЦБ 3854-У: 14 calendar days full refund; 359-ФЗ (from 21 Jan 2024): 30 days for insurance tied to a consumer loan, refund within 7 working days; ч. 12 ст. 11 353-ФЗ pro-rata refund on early repayment; the insurer cannot terminate unilaterally except as the law allows (ст. 310, 958).

Where this has actually happened
Regulator actions, court rulings and the contracts they were fought over.
- UK FCA PS21/5 (effective 1 January 2022): ban on 'price walking' in home and motor insurance; FCA estimated £4.2bn consumer savings over ten years
- Bank of Russia Directive 3854-У (14-day «период охлаждения»); Federal Law 359-ФЗ extended it to 30 calendar days for insurance tied to consumer loans from 21 January 2024
- US CFPB Regulation X, 12 CFR 1024.37: 45-day notice before force-placed insurance charges
What to do
In order, from the thing that takes a minute to the thing that takes a letter.
- Diary the renewal date, get two or three quotes and cancel in writing
- UK: the renewal price may not exceed the equivalent new-business price and you may opt out of auto-renewal at any time (FCA PS21/5)
- RU: check the «автоматическая пролонгация» and card-storage consent, use the cooling-off (14 days
- 30 days for credit-linked insurance) for a full refund and claim a pro-rata refund on early loan repayment (ч. 12 ст. 11 353-ФЗ)
- US: respond to force-placed notices with proof of coverage (12 CFR 1024.37)
- Demand written reasons for non-renewal and shop early.
